In the early 1950s, the pioneer disaster researchers set forth what they called a series of Adisaster myths.@ They said there were six widely accepted major ideas about how human beings behaved in disaster situations, but for which they could find little or no support in their field studies. This paper describes these beliefs as that people in crises react in irrational panicky ways and behave in an antisocial manner by looting, that impacted populations are passive in the face of (...) threats and manifest severe mental health consequences, as well as irresponsibly abandoning their role responsibilities because people can not rise to the challenges of a crisis. The paper then examines whether the very extensive research of the last 50 years raises questions about the validity of the idea of Adisaster myths@. It reports there still is solid research based data for four of the myths; people do not panic, abandon important social roles, are passive, and are unable to rise to the challenges of the extremes stress of a disaster. Looting is still very rare in typical disasters in Western type societies but the picture is unclear for other kinds of social systems; mass looting can occur in catastrophes if some other facilitating social conditions are present. The question of severe mental health consequences in disasters is hotly disputed by two competing points of view that are not easily reconcilable. (shrink)

Ce constat, fait par des savants-philosophes comme Henri Poincaré ou Federigo Enriques, a eu une importance que l’épistémologie du XXe siècle a ignorée, mais qu’il faut aujourd’hui réactiver au nom de valeurs anciennes: l’égalité, la démocratie, l’ouverture, la recherche sans limite dogmatique. L’analyse de l’œuvre d’Enriques nous permet ici de saisir l’enjeu d’une telle démarche.

This book examines the role of acts of choice in classical and intuitionistic mathematics. Featuring fifteen papers - both new and previously published - it offers a fresh analysis of concepts developed by the mathematician and philosopher L.E.J. Brouwer, the founder of intuitionism. The author explores Brouwer's idealization of the creative subject as the basis for intuitionistic truth, and in the process he also discusses an important, related question: to what extent does the intuitionistic perspective succeed in avoiding the classical (...) realistic notion of truth? The papers detail realistic aspects in the idealization of the creative subject and investigate the hidden role of choice even in classical logic and mathematics, covering such topics as bar theorem, type theory, inductive evidence, Beth models, fallible models, and more. In addition, the author offers a critical analysis of the response of key mathematicians and philosophers to Brouwer's work. These figures include Michael Dummett, Saul Kripke, Per Martin-Löf, and Arend Heyting. Callimachus,ep. 1 Pfeiffer relates an anecdote about Pittacus: when consulted by a stranger from Atarneus who was wondering whether to marry a woman of his own social class or one of a higher status, he suggests the question is answered by the cries of the children playing with tops, τν κατ ｃαντν ἔλα. The chequered history of the transmission and interpretation of the poem is beset by a number of unfavourable or patronizing judgements which, I hope to show, have their (...) origin in a series of misunderstandings. The poem seems to lack the sharp point characteristic of epigrams, and indeed Gow-Page go so far as to pronounce that it ‘has no claim to be called an epigram at all’. We now have a number of valuable parallels for the unusual length of the piece, but grave doubts continue to be expressed about the Callimachean authorship of the poem. While Diogenes Laertius, who quotes the poem in his life of Pittacus, explicitly attributes it to καλλμαχοఁ ν τοῖఁ ’Epsilon;πιγρμμαఁιν, in P and PI there is no ascription at all: there our epigram has been mistakenly consigned to the ’ɛπιτμβια simply becauseAP7.81, on the Seven Sages, is followed by some fifty epigrams on them and other philosophers, all derived from D.L. In the Palatine ms. there survive traces of the questions raised by this poem, though—surprisingly—both Pfeiffer and Gow-Page fail to report them. (shrink)

I temi discussi all’interno del volume sono il frutto di una intensa attività seminariale svolta all’interno dei corsi di Filosofia politica e di Storia delle dottrine politiche presso il Dipartimento di Scienze politiche dell’Università di Roma Sapienza. Ha tra i suoi obiettivi quello di introdurre allo studio e alla comprensione di alcuni argomenti che sono al centro della politica e sono volti al compimento del grande progetto politico che vede nella libertà i luoghi della felicità e della solidarietà. Dalla riflessione (...) che ne è scaturita è emersa la convinzione che alla base di questo progetto la democrazia continua ad essere, nonostante le sue criticità, un valore attuale e uno strumento fondamentale per la convivenza pacifica tra i popoli, in un epoca in cui la libertà si è riconciliata con l’uguaglianza assumendo il significato di fonte di legittimazione democratica che oggi si ripropone a tutela delle differenze che fanno «di ciascuno di noi un individuo unico». L’analisi di un periodo storico attraverso la sua narrazione, sia esso il Medioevo o persino un’epoca più recente, considera una moltitudine di fonti, assai eterogenee e di forma non sempre immediata. In alcuni casi uno studioso può nutrire un interesse perfino secondario per un documento storico in sé, rivolgendo l’attenzione alle _motivazioni_ e al _contesto_ che hanno portato alla creazione e alla conservazione di una testimonianza, sia essa scritta, orale o iconografica. La lettura del passato apre diverse prospettive: è possibile (...) rintracciare un genere narrativo che più di ogni altro meglio descrive il Medioevo? In quale senso una fonte arricchisce la nostra conoscenza del passato? È sensato estendere lo studio a testimonianze non strettamente testuali o iconografiche, come le mappe geografiche? La riflessione che poggia su questi quesiti rivela un Medioevo in parte inventato, una fantasia che non è tuttavia l’ombra del passato storico, bensì il suo complemento. _Analysing an historical period, such as the Middle Ages, or a more recent era, through its narration, must take into consideration many heterogeneous sources, whose form is not always immediately identifiable. In some cases, scholars may even have a secondary interest in a specific historical document, preferring to study the _motivations_ and _context_ behind its creation and conservation of historical testimony, either written, spoken or iconographic._ _Interpreting the past opens up different perspectives: is it possible to determine a single narrative genre able to describe the Middle Ages better than others? In what sense does a historical source enrich our knowledge of the historical past? Does it make sense to include in the study of history, sources that are not strictly textual or iconographic, such as a geographical map?_ _Reflecting on these questions reveals an invented aspect of the Middle Ages, a fictional portrait that not only brings into view history__’s shadow but also complements it_. Nel presente contributo è nostra intenzione sondare un binomio che appare fondamentale in funzione dialogica interculturale e interreligiosa, ossia la relazione tra logos e mythos, principalmente in vista dell’incontro tra cristianesimo e tradizione induista. È nostra convinzione che le forme complementari di «teo-logia» e «teo-mythia» possa essere esplorato con frutto, tanto in funzione specifica dell’incontro con la tradizione induista, quanto per una più ampia e profonda inculturazione del vangelo.

Every structure, therefore also every institution, is inhabited by an “empty box”, a mobile space that can never be filled, which sets the elements in motion. This idea – which finds one of its many formulations, perhaps the most famous, in Deleuze’s Structuralism – is the outcome of a long and fruitful path, from Durkheim, through Mauss, to the anthropology of Lévi-Strauss. This article discusses the ontological status of the parts of substances in Aristotle’s theory of categories. Since in this theory the substantial parts, as well as the wholes, are primary subjects of predication, i.e. substances, a part may be to its whole as Socrates is to Callias so that the mereological composition of substances can be regarded as an accident . It is argued here that in Cat. 7 Aristotle is trying to rule out this possibility by redefining the boundaries (...) of the category of relatives itself. Starting from the framework of the Academic debate and then following closely the text of Cat. 7, the author provides a detailed reconstruction of Aristotle’s argument in order to establish the reason for which the parts of substances hold such an uncertain status. Furthermore, he shows that the Categories do not provide a definitive solution to the mereological problem, which has rather to be sought in the Metaphysics. The following results are attained: a moderately systematic component is revealed in Aristotle’s Categories and a mereological element is detected in the very core of his theory of substance. This research article aims to deliver an analytical representation of the intellectual environment of the culture journal Die Kreatur (1926–1930), a religious-dialogical quarterly edited by Martin Buber, Joseph Wittig, and Viktor von Weizsäcker and enlivened by some of the most prominent figures of German-Jewish interwar culture (among others W. Benjamin, H. S. Bergman, E. Rosenstock-Huessy, F. Rosenzweig, E. Simon, and L. Strauss). Building on a recognition of the problematic relationship between the dialogical model claimed in the programmatic foreword of the (...) journal and the group narratives enacted by its key contributors, the study attempts to outline the formation process of the intellectual plexus of the journal and to provide a differentiated analysis of its singular constituents via a sociologically informed framework. The representation of the intellectual network of Die Kreatur in accordance with the model of a “circle of circles” provides insight into the elusive dialectic of interaction and divergence that determines the relations between the main actors of the journal and thus contributes to unfold the interplay of biographical intersections and conceptual synergies, as well as incongruities, frictions, and contradictory instances that determines its editorial and philosophical profile. Numenio appartiene all’ambito degli interpreti medioplatonici dei dialoghi di Platone; nel Medioplatonismo, infatti, si diffuse la tendenza a interpretare la filosofia di Platone come in chiave sistematica. Il dialogo più rilevante per questa operazione esegetica nel Medioplatonismo fu certamente il Timeo. In questo contributo intendo concentrarmi sull’interpretazione delle pagine 28a-29a del Timeo da parte di Numenio di Apamea ed esaminarne l’esegesi alla luce della sua prospettiva onto-teologica. Nel Timeo, l’utilizzo del verbo βλέπω ha la funzione di descrivere il fatto che (...) il demiurgo è contemplativo nei confronti del paradigma intelligibile. In Numenio, invece, l’associazione del verbo βλέπω al demiurgo è volta a mostrare il ruolo di mediatore che il secondo dio svolge tra il primo principio e la materia. In questo modo si mostrerà come i passi del Timeo vengano interpretati da Numenio alla luce della sua metafisica dualista. (shrink)

In questo volume Enrico Fubini si propone di mettere in luce i temi fondamentali, le correnti piú importanti, i problemi chiave dell'estetica musicale contemporanea, iniziando il loro studio dall'illuminismo, in cui tali problemi affondano le loro radici. Il concetto di estetica è inteso nel senso piú largo, comprendendo le meditazioni sulla musica non solo degli studiosi di estetica e dei musicisti stessi, ma anche dei filosofi, degli psicologi, dei fisici e dei matematici.

The aim of this paper is to reconsider several proposals that have been put forward in order to develop a Proof-Theoretical Semantics, from the by now classical neo-verificationist approach provided by D. Prawitz and M. Dummett in the Seventies, to an alternative, more recent approach mainly due to the work of P. Schroeder-Heister and L. Hallnäs, based on clausal definitions. Some other intermediate proposals are very briefly sketched. Particular attention will be given to the role played by the so-called Fundamental (...) Assumption. We claim that whereas, in the neo-verificationist proposal, the condition expressed by that Assumption is necessary to ensure the completeness of the justification procedure ( from the outside , so to speak), within the definitional framework it is a built-in feature of the proposal. The latter approach, therefore, appears as an alternative solution to the problem which prompted the neo-verificationists to introduce the Fundamental Assumption. (shrink)

L’articolo si focalizza sulle relazioni fra la nozione di Ferraris di documentalità e le nozioni tradizionali di causalità, intenzionalità, e normatività. Mostrerò che la nozione di documentalità, al cui centro troviamo la nozione di traccia, si basa su una spiegazione della causalità stando alla quale i documenti sono costituiti da catene causali. Stando così le cose, occorre formulare un criterio per differenziare le catene documentali da altri tipi di catene causali. Argomenterò che, riconducendo l’intenzionalità alla documentalità, Ferraris si preclude la (...) possibilità di usare l’intenzionalità come criterio. Senza un tale criterio, però, la teoria della documentalità rischia di ritornare alla tesi di Derrida stando alla quale nulla esiste al di fuori del testo. La parte finale dell’articolo considera due strategie grazie alle quali la teoria può evitare tale rischio. (shrink)
